Still Life With Crash-Helmet

I've been working on this for a couple of months, and finished it yesterday an hour before a visit from the framer. It's my first attempt at a still life, for competition entry in a few days' time...

It measures 100x70cm, or slightly more including the frame.

I am struggling to take a good photograph of the painting, so here's one too dark and one too bright!

'Auntie' - painting in progress

Sticking to my 'start rough' method, I gradually refine the image in layers.

Still some way to go, but she looks a bit like herself already...

Drawings for postcards.

In Progress - David Sylvian

Stage One of my 'start rough' process. The composition will differ from the source photograph in random small ways, which I can keep, erase or exaggerate.
About halfway through, gradually tightening up the image, pushing and pulling paint and shadows around.
The specs are not quite symmetrical yet, that's next on the list...

COMING SOON - THE FINISHED PAINTING.

Alice Coltrane

'Alice Coltrane'
Acrylic on frameless 16x16" canvas.
This one was a slow process: Please compare it with its in-progress photo down the page.
Now in exhibition in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

New work with the brush - and brush-pen.

Work In Progress: 'Charlie Russell No. 3'
24x30", acrylic on canvas.
Brush-pen sketch: 'Two Women'.
One pen to do all these different lines and filling-in? Amazing. And it cuts the usual drawing time by half.

A fast sketch in ink and chalk of a glass head wearing a hat by Dorothy Biddle, in her recent retrospective exhibition at Althorpe Gallery, Leamington Spa.

A brush-pen drawing of some sketchbooks, from an exhibition flyer. I have one black brush-pen, one grey and one dark violet. I have been hoarding ink for years and I'm very happy to have started to use it.
I am currently building up a body of work for exhibition. I am also seeking commissions for portraits and other freelance art work. Please get in touch with any ideas: pete @ petewiseman.co.uk

Thanks for viewing and reading ;)

A new painting - 'Now' - October 2012

'Now' - October 2012'

Acrylic and ink on canvas, Oct 2012

The biggest canvas I have painted so far, and something of a breakthrough. For a while I have been hoping to bridge my abstract drawing and figurative painting; this feels like a step in that direction.

It is the result of a series of accidental or automatic decisions. It was not planned, but a lot of thought went into it as I was going along. It is an attempt at painting an image 'of the times'.

Paintings In Progress

Here are three current paintings. They are getting bigger...

Neil.
The original is more muted.
This painting is 90% finished.

I don't know the name of this pond, but it's a local scenic spot.
Yes, I will straighten the horizon.

Alice. [Actually Alice Coltrane, but I don't want to say that until it really looks like her.]
Parts of this figure and face are in the process of being moved across the painting. My method is 'start rough'.

New drawing, new painting, new art.

In 2012 I have renewed my commitment to art.

...more on that soon!

A recent extra surprise has been a change in my drawing practice. I am now using a brush-pen, which bridges drawing and painting.

Here is a series of new drawings. It's not hard to see a difference from my earlier work on this blog.
